The primary purposes of the Church

The primary purposes of the Church

Now let us look at the primary purposes of the Church:

  1. To Magnify God: The primary purpose of the Church is to glorify God and to magnify Him before the sons of men. All that we do in the Body of Christ has one primary purpose, that is, TO GLORIFY GOD. When this becomes the chief aim or goal of all our activities, it streamlines our focus and purifies our motives. See Isaiah 43:7; 43:21; Psalm 86:9; Matthew 5:13-16; John 15:8; 17:4; Romans 1:8; 15:5-6; 1 Corinthians 6:19-20; 10:31-32; 1 Thessalonians 1:4-10; 1 Peter 2:9; 2:11-12; 4:10-11
  2. To Mirror Him. We are called to reveal and to reflect the Charisma and the Character of Christ, that is, the Love and the Life of Christ, the Person and the Power of Christ. Christianity is the revelation of Christ in a human person. It is Christ reproduced in a man. That is the essence of Christianity. The Church exists to show Christ to the world. They should look at us and see Jesus. See Acts 4:13; Galatians 4:19 KJV, GNT, NLT, MSG; John 14:12; 13:34-35; 15:12-13; Romans 8:28-29; 1 Corinthians 12:7; 2 Corinthians 3:17-18; Philippians 2:14-15; Colossians 1:24-27; James 2:14-26; John 17:22-23,26; 1 Peter 2:21-22; 1 John 2:5-6
  3. Missions: We exist to expand the influence and the impact of the kingdom of God in the earth by winning souls. It’s our primary purpose. The Church is a soul winning venture. It is a spiritual organization with the sole aim of bringing people out of darkness into the light. See Acts 13:47-48; 26:16-19. The Church is more than a gathering. It is the consulate of the kingdom of God for the purpose of colonizing the nations. See Matthew 28:19-20; Mark 16:15; Matthew 24:14; Mark 13:10. We are called and commissioned to reach out to the lost. See Luke 19:10; 15:1-10; Acts 8:4-13. Soul winning is the primary aim of the Church. See 1 Corinthians 9:19-23; 10:31-33; 1 Peter 3:1-2; 1 Corinthians 7:16
  4. Membership. Those we win have to organized into a local church and cell groups for the purpose of fellowship and mutual edification. A Church is no church if there’s no mutual interaction or fellowship amongst its members. There must be mutual connection between members. It is association of likeminded people. See Philippians 1:27; Hebrews 10:24-25; Acts 2:1-4; 41,46-47; 4:4; 5:14; 6:7; 20:7; 1 Corinthians 12:12
  5. Maturity. We have to work to see that our members grow up spiritually. This happens when teach and preach the Word of God and make it our Rule Book for all matters of faith and practice. A Mature Christian thinks, speaks and does the Word. See 1 Peter 2:1-2; Galatians 4:1-2 KJV; Romans 8:14-17; 8:18-22; Galatians 4:1-7; Ephesians 4:11-16
  6. Mutual Love and Edification: We exist to build one another up and to edify one another. We are called to encourage one another, pray for one another share with one another. The Church is a place of mutual love. It is community that thrives on selflessness and self sacrifice. See Acts 2:44-46; 4:34-37; John 13:34-35; 1 Corinthians 12:12-27; Philippians 2:1-11; Romans 15:1-6. We are called to help and support one another in times of need. See Acts 11:27-30; 12:25; Romans 15:25-26; 1 Corinthians 16:1-2; 2 Corinthians 8:1-15
  7. Mentorship. The Church is a place of mentorship and apprenticeship. People need to be mentored and discipled by mature believers. Every church must set up a system and structures that will facilitate mentorship. See Mark 3:13-15; Philippians 2:19-22; 1 Corinthians 4:15-17; 1 Timothy 4:6-8; 2 Timothy 3:14-17
  8. Ministry. We have to equip and empower the saints to serve and minister in the Body of Christ. Every believer has a Ministry within and outside the Body of Christ. We are called to serve in the kingdom and in the Marketplace. The Church is a place of Equipping and Empowering people to effectively use their gifts and abilities to serve the interests of the kingdom of God by creating value within the Church and in the Marketplace. See Ephesians 2:10; Acts 11:22-26; Acts 13:1-4; Ephesians 4:11-12,16; Galatians 5:13; 1 Peter 4:10-11; Romans 12:4-8
  9. Manifestations: We are called to demonstrate and manifest the Power of God to the church and to the world. We are called to make God real to the peoples of this world by the demonstration of God’s Power wherever we go. See Mark 16:17-18; 16:20; 1 Corinthians 2:4-5; 12:4-11; Acts 4:29-31,33; 5:12-16; 8:5-13; 14:3; 19:11-12
  10. Multiplication. God has called us to multiply disciples and churches everywhere. Every church is called to reproduce itself by raising disciples. We are called to plant churches that plant other churches. This is a kingdom and every kingdom seeks to spread and expand its geographical territory and influence. The kingdom of God is no different. We must keep planting and pioneering new churches by multiplying disciples through an active, effective leadership development system. See Acts 8:4-13; 11:19-21; 16:9-10; 2 Timothy 2:2
